It’s Nice to Be Loved

It’s nice to be loved.
So, when they first show up,
it can make you feel special.

They flutter about you,
check you out, tickle your ears,
and then invite their friends to meet you.

Soon they ask for a bite to eat.
You’re a hospitable person
and think, “Why not?”

It’s nice to be loved,
until you realize,
you’re the snack.

They take and drink
the very lifeblood out of you,
(quite literally).

Engorged, they ghost you,
leaving you with bumps and itches,
and a craving for hydrocortisone.

It’s nice to be loved,
except by mosquitoes.
